In honour of our consecration, our first Chaplain, the late W. Bro. Revd Dr. Anthony CH Christian, Vicar of St. Nicolas Church, Pevensey, wrote a prayer to be said at the beginning of the Festive Board:
Almighty and eternal God, Architect and Ruler of the Universe, we bless thy holy Name for our three villages of Pevensey, Pevensey Bay and Westham. Grant to us the ability to build upon the foundations that have been established for us, that we may prove worthy of our high vocation as Freemasons. Give us strength that we may the better be enabled to fulfil our calling in all godliness, righteousness and sobriety, and dedicate our lives as true and faithful Freemasons, so that by prudence, temperance, fortitude and justice we may be enabled to hand on to our successors the principles and tenets of our Craft, pure and unsullied as we have received them. To the honour and glory of thy sacred Name. SMIB.
He delivered this prayer from the first Regular Meeting, although over time this has ceased to be said at every Festive Board. However, the members wish this tradition to be continued, so in future it will be said at least once a year by the Chaplain.
On 26 January 1992, the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. David W. Llewellyn, CBE consecrated Templar Aquila Lodge No. 9450 at the Sussex Masonic Centre, Brighton, BN1 3YH. In the presence of over a hundred other freemasons, the Founders participated en bloc in this moving ceremony. The Master Designate and Wardens Designate, whose names appear on the Warrant of the Lodge, were reminded of the responsibilities and commitments they had undertaken.
Following the Consecration, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, V.W. Bro. Richard H. Mosse, PGSwdB appointed W. Bro. Anthony E. Davies as the first [or Primus] Worshipful Master, who then appointed his officers.

Despite his involvement on the Founding Committee, Bro. NP Clive-Matthews was unfortunately ineligible to be a Founder as he had not been a Master Mason for the minimum period of 3 years.
In addition to the names of the Charter Master and Wardens, 4 other Founders names could be listed on the Warrant, so the remaining 14 Founders decided to draw lots. ‘The lot was mine’ said Bro. Revd Tony Christian, W. Bro. John Schofield, W. Bro. Brian Stiff and Bro. Barry Taylor.

As our Lodge was deliberately intended to be formed as a ‘country’ Lodge, this decision meant that it would be meeting outside an existing town-based masonic centre. By the time the Founders had purchased all the necessary Lodge furniture and equipment together with Collars, Jewels, Minute Book et al, there were insufficient funds left to design and purchase a Banner for its formation. The Founders were determined to have one, so a target was set of having our own banner dedicated during Year Two and as the Charter Senior Warden, I responsible for ensuring its implementation.
We were very fortunate that a well-known local banner designer, W. Bro. Alan Oakley, a member of Michelham Priory Lodge No. xxxx was able to take on this commission and did not require full payment until the banner was finished. This enabled the members to hold several functions including an all night pig roast and summer fair so raising sufficient funds.
The banner, which is illustrated below, may appear deceptively simple in concept and design. However, it serves as a perpetual memory of those who were its founding officers, their names being displayed on the two pillars, which represent those placed at the porchway or entrance of King Solomon’s Temple.
On a personal note, after 25 enjoyable years in Templar Aquila I am still extremely proud and pleased to have been our Charter Senior Warden, even though I had to forgo the opportunity of being installed in the chair of King Solomon in my mother Lodge because I was not a Past Master at the time when the Lodge was consecrated.
